Deck Care and Maintenance
Everyone at Frontier Construction would like to thank you once
again for choosing our services. We hope that you and your family enjoy
your deck for many years to come. Here are some helpful hints for maintaining
your deck and helping to keep it looking new.
Through much trial and error, and valued input from our customers, we have
some insight on making and keeping your deck looking beautiful.
Step 1.
If your deck was constructed in temperatures consistently
above 70 degrees, we strongly recommend the application of SEASONITE or a similar
product that will help prevent all the bad things that happen with wood, such as
the splintering, shrinking, twisiting, warping or cupping of wood by greatly slowing
down the drying out process. This product is easily applied and can be purchased
at your local home improvement store. Another option would be to water your deck twice
a day with a garden hose untill the temperature cools.
Step 2.
Wait approximately 2-8 months while enjoying your new deck. This should provide ample
time to allow your deck to sufficiently dry and allow the "mill-glase" (a thin,
semi-transparant coating found on new lumber) to wear off.
Step 3.
Pressure wash your deck with approximately 2000-2500 psi using a 40 degree nozzle.
If the washer has an adjustable nozzle rotate it until it produces a fan spray.
This combination of settings should be sufficient to thoroughly clean the deck
without cutting into the soft lumber.
Immediately after pressure washing, apply a deck cleaner which will greatly help
restore your deck to its original appearance. One to try is DECKSWOOD DECK CLEANER
which, along with similar products, can be purchased at your local home improvement
store.
Step 4.
Finally, it is time to seal your deck. We recommend a Penatrating oil rather than a
Deck sealer. Listed below are a few oil-based products that should provide excellent
and lasting results. Refer to the product instructions for proper application.
- BEHR avaliable at HOME DEPOT
- TWP (Total Wood Preservative) avaliable at IOWA PAINT
- DECKSCAPES (Premium Oil-Based Deck Stain) avaliable at SHERWIN WILLIAMS
- X-100 available at HIRSHFIELDS
ENJOY! We appreciate your comments and suggestions.
